More probable, we're addicted to something else that promises the same: CrossFit, essential oils, or something garden variety like coin, sex, or a item human relationship that's captured our attention. We 21st-century Westerners love self-improvement, ever seeking the adjacent upgrade for our lives and selves. We believe in it; we securely believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Before knowing Christ, I wanted to alive—the verb's pregnant emphatic, hard to pin downwards, something more than merely existing. Mayhap I could sense the decease I was living in without being assuming enough to name it. Passionately, purposefully, I sought to grab life past the shoulders. Yet I was only half right (that most seductive kind of incorrect). I did need to alive. Just to go there, I needed to die.

Jesus knew we needed to dice before we were ever born, and he provided the ways for that in dying for u.s.a.. That's the gift. Look at how Paul framed information technology in Galatians 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer alive, but Christ lives in me. The life I at present live in the torso, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Paul spoke here in metaphor that isn't really metaphor. If the old me stays alive, awaiting a cosmic cocky-comeback projection, I never escape hell. Instead, I live it. Jesus came to give us more.

Right after Galatians 2:20, Paul declares in poetry 21, "if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for aught!" He was writing to a people who thought they could get to life through the law, walking once more that minefield of half right. God'due south law is perfect, such that to continue it would bring someone life! But the other half of the truth falls like a guillotine's blade: Nosotros can't.

Today we console ourselves with "Nobody's perfect." Withal we still alive equally if we tin reach life ourselves—yep, even as Christians.
